Family Tales and Letters is a fictional story about Wyanne Malone who actually lived in Charleston, SC during the Revolutionary War, but about whom little is known other than she remained a Tory during the Revolutionary War.
It depicts her life as she arrives from Ireland to work as an indentured servant at a historical plantation and then move to Charleston to prosper as a seamstress, have a family, and then see the life she loves dissolve during the conflicts generated by the Revolutionary War.
Because she remains loyal to the British Crown, she suffers tragic loss in her family. But, throughout her trials, she remains steadfast in her convictions as she confronts them.
Carefully researched, Family Tales presents a vivid picture of Charleston and the people who lived in it when it was the richest city in the world from the rice grown in surrounding plantations.

I really enjoyed this book. It gave a wonderfully detailed view of plantation and city life around Charleston as the country moved to its first civil war, the American Revolution. The story begins with a teenage girl leaving her home in Ireland to be an indentured servant on a plantation. Told by her son, he quickly (by the third chapter) switches to having her name be Ma. Her story is rich, full of hope, fear, hard work, and the lives of people she meets and learns to love. It is also true to the time. People fall in love, marry and die. We laugh and cry with the heroine as her life is influenced by slaves, the master and mistress, and most of all, the foreman.
Halfway through the book the focus changes. This happens when her first son is born. From this point on it becomes his story and not hers. The shift was rather abrupt, but the story didn't falter. As much as I missed hearing her voice I also enjoyed learning his story.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn what the day-to-day life of an average person was at this time. It was also good to get the perspective of loyalists. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because of the author's switch to calling her Ma and the abrupt change in the direction of the story.

Family Tales and Letters is a living history book of 18th century southern America and it made me feel like I was right there watching all the drama unfold. I hated to see the book end, so I read it again. A great book.
